Strength Training for Life

Strength Training – Worth the Time and Effort

Need more validation and proof that strength training is worth the time and energy? After-all, weight training does cost you time, effort and recovery time. I thought I’d share this image from a study on active strength over the lifespan.

In a study measuring the impact of strength training, in men ages 20 through 80, researchers selected an example of strength in a common motion, peak knee extension strength, and measured it in men who strength train and men who do not strength train. The graph shown below shows the significant increase in strength, in a motion necessary for standing, in men who strength train.

Although, muscle and strength decline as we age, it’s interesting to note that an 80 year old man who trains can be stronger than a 30 year old man, who does not strength train. This is important and encouraging information.

Three Take Aways:

  • Stay consistent over the long haul
  • Prioritize strength training (meaning squeeze your muscles hard to the point of temporary physical exhaustion. Then do it again and again-A few sets)
  • Strength and mobility throughout the lifetime go hand in hand
